Internet & managed networks — Wilton, NSW

Wilton is growing fast and still has mobile black spots. I live here, so I know which streets struggle and why.

On the ground in Wilton

Wilton is a small town about to get very big, and the internet has to catch up.

Wilton had around 3,000 people at the 2016 census and the planners expect 15,000 new homes over twenty years under the Wilton 2040 plan. Wilton is a mix of two networks. The newer estates such as Bingara Gorge are on Opticomm fibre, not NBN, so the plan you can buy depends on which network your street was built on. The older streets and the acreage around Wilton Park Road are NBN or no fixed line at all, and plenty of properties out there lean on fixed wireless, satellite or Starlink.

Mobile has been the real weak point. Council itself called Wilton a long standing black spot, with the signal dropping out along Picton Road, and a new tower only went up in late 2020. If your phone is patchy, home wifi calling has to work properly, and that comes down to how the network inside the house is built.

I live here, so this is my own patch. One private Wilton home runs on UniFi with 24/7 monitoring, and any dropout gets flagged straight away. Before Better Net I spent years in NBN and telco construction for Telstra, NBN Co, Lendlease and Downer EDI, so I know what is in the pit down the road.
